Asparagus PLANT Asparagus officinalis – Heirloom & Untreated Perennial

$17.46 $28.63
Asparagus PLANT Asparagus officinalis – Heirloom & Untreated PerennialA Perennial Investment for Your Garden’s FutureStart your perennial asparagus patch the rewarding way! This healthy, vigorous young plant is grown from heirloom, untreated seed. While it requires a little more patience than an established crown, you are giving your asparagus the best possible start in its permanent location, often resulting in a healthier, longer-lived plant that will produce a gourmet harvest for decades to come.A Note on White vs. Green Asparagus: Did you know you can grow both green and white asparagus from this same plant? The difference is simply in the harvesting method:Green Asparagus: Grows exposed to sunlight, which allows it to produce chlorophyll, giving it its green colour and a robust, grassy flavour.White Asparagus: Is created by “earthing up” or mounding soil over the spears as they grow, blocking all sunlight. This prevents chlorophyll production, resulting in a more tender texture, a milder, slightly sweeter taste, and its characteristic pale colour. It is a beloved delicacy in Germany and across Europe, where its harvest in spring (“Spargelzeit”) is a celebrated season!Asparagus is a gourmet delight, perfect for grilling, steaming, roasting, or adding to stir-fries. Beyond its exquisite flavour, it is a powerhouse of nutrition. It is an excellent source of prebiotic fibre for gut health and folate for cell growth. It is also rich in Vitamins A, C, E, and K, and provides important minerals like potassium and phosphorus.Ideal for Australian Climates: This hardy perennial is adaptable and thrives in a range of Australian conditions.Cool & Temperate Regions (e.g., VIC, Southern NSW): This is the ideal climate for asparagus. The cold winter dormancy period is essential for strong annual production.Subtropical Regions (e.g., SEQ, Northern NSW): Asparagus grows well but requires a sunny spot. It may have a shorter, less distinct dormant period. Provide excellent drainage, especially during humid, wet summers.Arid Regions (Inland Areas): Can be grown successfully with consistent watering and partial afternoon shade to protect from extreme heat.Product Details:Price is for one (1) young asparagus plant, grown from seed and supplied in a small pot.Naturally grown with care in our permaculture food forest in Pacific Haven, QLD.Dispatch within Australia only. Unfortunately, we cannot send to Norfolk Island, NT, SA, TAS, or WA.Local pick-up is available by appointment. Please note: The product image is an example.Planting & Growing JourneyInitial Care: Upon arrival, give it a good drink and place it in a partially shaded spot to recover from its journey. Transplant into the ground or a larger pot within a few days.Planting: Choose a sunny, permanent position with well-drained soil. Asparagus hates “wet feet,” so a slightly raised bed is ideal. Dig a hole large enough for the root ball and water it in thoroughly. The Patience Payoff:Year 1: Focus on strong growth. Do not harvest; let all the spears grow into ferns to nourish the plant.Year 2: You may be able to take a very light harvest for 1-2 weeks.Year 3 : Enjoy a full 8-10 week harvest season each spring!Additional NotesA Long-Term Crop: This young plant is an investment. A well-established asparagus bed can remain productive for 20 years or more.Sun Acclimatisation: Our plants are grown in partial shade. Gradually introduce them to full sun before planting.Disclaimer: As with any new food, we recommend you research before consumption. Please also see the full disclaimer in the footer of this page.
