Cranberry Hibiscus SEEDS – Red Shield Hibiscus – Heirloom & Untreated – Hibiscus acetosella #8

$79.2 $147.31
Cranberry Hibiscus SEEDS – Red Shield Hibiscus – Heirloom & Untreated – Hibiscus acetosellaAdd a striking burst of deep burgundy to your edible garden with these heirloom, untreated Cranberry Hibiscus seeds (Hibiscus acetosella), also known as Red Shield Hibiscus. This fast‑growing, heat‑loving perennial (often grown as an annual in cooler climates) is prized for its stunning maple‑shaped, cranberry‑red foliage and its mild, tangy, cranberry‑like flavour.Unlike many ornamental hibiscus, this variety is grown primarily for its edible leaves and flowers, making it a beautiful and productive addition to any food garden. It reaches about 1–1.5 meters tall, is incredibly low‑maintenance, and attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies.Uses:Salads & Garnish: The tender young leaves add a beautiful pop of colour and a pleasant, tart, citrusy flavour to fresh salads.Cooking: Use mature leaves like spinach – steam, sauté, or add to stir‑fries, soups, and curries. The red colour leaches slightly, tinting dishes a lovely pink.Refreshing Tea: Steep fresh or dried leaves and flowers in hot water for a vibrant ruby‑red, cranberry‑like tea. Serve hot or iced.Natural Food Colouring: The deep red infusion can be used to naturally colour rice, lemonade, cocktails, or baked goods.Edible Flowers: The delicate pink to burgundy flowers are also edible and make a stunning garnish.Nutrients & Health Benefits:Cranberry Hibiscus is not just pretty – it’s packed with nutrition and traditional medicinal value:Rich in anthocyanins – The same powerful antioxidants found in cranberries and blueberries, which help reduce inflammation and protect cells from oxidative stress.High in vitamin C – Supports immune function and skin health.Contains iron & calcium – Beneficial for blood health and strong bones.Traditional uses – In some cultures, the leaves are used to help lower blood pressure, ease constipation, and support liver health. The tea is often drunk as a gentle detoxifying beverage.Note: Always do your own research before using any plant medicinally, especially if pregnant, nursing, or on medication.Growing & Sowing Tips:Cranberry Hibiscus is incredibly easy to grow from seed and thrives in warm conditions. Follow these steps for best results:Prepare seeds – The seeds have a hard coat. For faster germination, lightly nick the seed coat with a nail file or soak in warm water for 24 hours before sowing.Start in trays – Sow seeds about 5 mm deep in good quality seed‑raising mix. Keep moist and warm (20–30°C).Germination – Seeds typically sprout within 7–21 days. Be patient – warmth speeds things up.Sun & position – Loves full sun but tolerates light afternoon shade. More sun = deeper red foliage colour.Soil & water – Prefers well‑drained, moderately rich soil. Water regularly until established, then it becomes quite drought‑tolerant. Does not like to sit in water.Spacing – Space plants about 50–80 cm apart. They grow into bushy shrubs.Pruning – Pinch back young plants to encourage bushier growth. Regular harvesting of leaves keeps the plant productive.Climate – Perennial in tropical/subtropical regions (QLD, NT). In cooler areas (NSW, VIC, SA), grow as a warm‑season annual or in a pot that can be moved indoors during frost.Harvesting – Pick young, tender leaves regularly for best flavour. Older leaves are tougher but still good for cooking.Seed Details:Price: For 8 seeds, naturally grown in my permaculture food forest in Pacific Haven, QLD Australia.Quality: Heirloom, untreated, open‑pollinated.Shipping & Important Notes:Sending to: QLD, NSW, and Victoria only (within Australia).Pickup: Available by appointment from Pacific Haven, QLD.Please Note: Do your own research before trying any new foods or herbal remedies.
